7-Day Trip to Tequis Mexico/Watercolor Workshop

The trip is 7 days in total including arrival and departure days. We will paint Four (4) of those days with the workshop beginning at 9:30-1:30pm (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) with plein air painting to be scheduled (weather permitting). Plein air painting is optional and is available on all days with the instructor outside the classroom.

We will provide reference photos for painting. Subjects will include landscapes, still life and animals for painting in watercolor. Classes will introduce you to plein air painting and principals of watercolor and impressionistic painting.

The workshop is for all levels of watercolor painters. We will examine the fundamentals of watercolor painting to assure that all students are familiar with the techniques. Daily discussions and application of the principles and elements of design will be woven into your painting experience. We will prepare a watercolor painting and emphasize color mixing, sketching and tonal studies.

We will be learning various watercolor texturing techniques including ways to create light, BOKEH and Orb light effects, scratching, splatter, stenciling and other texturing techniques to blend and unify your painting elements focusing on impressionism. We will also show you how to make impressionistic backgrounds for your watercolors.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to the principals of drawing and composing a painting with emphasis on light and contrast. The workshop will also focus on the use of watercolor to paint exciting impressionistic paintings. You will paint from photographs and plein air to explore the use of light and shadow to create interesting compositions and achieve dynamic results.

Each day you will engage in exercises that will solidify the content. We will discuss the methods and the impact that various techniques used to achieve satisfactory results.

We welcome both novice and advanced students and we will tailors this experience to individual needs.

The INSTRUCTOR

Instructor Al Kline painting ‘en plein air’.

Al Kline is an award winning watercolor artist and president of the Watercolor Society of South Texas (WSST) since 2018.

He was born in Holland to Dutch parents. He moved to the United States as a young child. He showed interest in art including watercolor at a young age drawing. He began to draw as early as age 5. He painted his first watercolor at the age of 11.

He has taught a number of classes both nationally and internationally, through Zoom and other platforms.

His ability to simplify the painting process and skill of drawing and design have gained him international recognition. He has accepted numerous awards. His work has been recognized in local, state, national and international exhibitions. He is a signature member of the Watercolor Society of South Texas and member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Southwestern Watercolor Society and Transparent Watercolor Society of America.
